ITANAGAR, Sep 21: The State Government has been urged to draw up remedial plans to save one of the arterial city bypass roads at ESS-Sector connecting Ganga and Raj Bhawan, which is on the brink of collapse and eroding at an alarming pace following torrential rainfall recently.

The residents have been demanding an RCC bridge over the said portion of the road in question and installation of street lights to help commuters to drive safely through the stretch during night time.

Such is the condition of the road at present that only light vehicles could wade through the road, and people using the road daily fear it could collapse any time.

Warning signs along the corner of the road have been made and a traffic warden is deputed to keep commuters out of harm's way.

Raising serious concern over the safety of commuters and residents, the Arunachal Civil Society chairman, Patey Tayum, who rushed to the spot following complaints from locals, said that the erosion along the said stretch of road has become a serious threat for daily commuters.

This reporter who visited the site also found that recent rains have eroded the road some half a meter which reduced its breadth to barely a meter long making it unfit to ply.

“If no action is initiated urgently, something catastrophic could take place along that roadway,” Tayum underscored.

He also lamented that despite submission of a proposal of an RCC bridge by concerned PWD department to state government no action has been initiated to address the problem.

The ACS chairman urged the state government to initiate a scheme under SADA or SIDF and construct a bridge within this financial year.

"The horrible state of this road is a concern for us. The road had been neglected since last three years," complained a resident.

Having lived in the locality for the last decade, he said that the road is being used by the Chief Minister, several ministers, but no one cares for its repair.

It is to be mentioned here that earlier a Tata Mobile also fell into the 150 deep gorge, killing three people followed by another scooter accident. During the peak hours on NH-415, the traffic is being diverted through this road also.

Meanwhile, when contacted Deputy Commissioner Prince Dhawan informed that he has already  requested the Power Department for a lighting system for the safety of commuters.

However, the Chief Engineer, PWD could not be contacted for his comment.
