Tawang, May 10: In a rare medical feat, a team of doctors from the Indian Army and Khandro Drowa Tsangmu District Hospital, Tawang on Sunday saved a 26-year old man from the sure clutches of death by surgically removing a rod that accidentally pierced his lower abdomen.
The man reportedly fell down accidentally and an iron rod of 20 cm length & 16 mm calibre got impaled into his lower abdomen. A joint team of District Hospital Tawang and Army Field Hospital at Khirmu immediately swung into action and the rod was surgically removed keeping the patient under general anaesthesia. Dr. (Major) Ranjan Kumar, Surgeon from Army Hospital, Anaesthesiologist Lieutenant Colonel Ritesh Sharma in coordination with Dr. Ashish Pao, also an Anaesthesiologist and other doctors and staff played the collaborative role.
DMO Tawang Dr Wangdi Lama informed that despite non-availability of adequate imaging facility which prevented from knowing the extent of damage caused to the patient’s abdominal viscera, the team took the risk to operate as evacuation to an advanced medical centre was nearly impossible. The surgery was successful and the rod was removed and the success will stand out as yet another example of bonhomie between the Army and the civil administration of Tawang.
“It was possible only because of the kind cooperation from the Commanding Officer Army Hospital Colonel Abir Gogoi and the Commander of Tawang Brigade,” DMO added. DIPRO
