Itanagar, Nov 23: Continuing with its ongoing Refresher Training for the state’s Gaon Buras/Buris (GBs), Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) today conducted the third phase titled ‘Synergy between Customary Practices and Formal Law’ here from its capital office in association with the Union Department of Justice under ‘Access to Justice, North East and J&K’ project.
Member Secretary, APSLSA Jaweplu Chai explained the project’s details and the role played by APSLSA and its subsidiaries in its implementation. Deputy Secretary, Law & Judicial Department-cum-OSD, APSLSA Dani Belo while deliberating on the topic ‘Village Authority under Assam Frontier (Administration of Justice) Regulation, 1945’ asked the GBs to be ears and eyes of the government. Gauhati High Court, Itanagar Permanent Bench Advocate Sunil Mow spoke on Schedule Tribes & Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 with special reference to Arunachal Pradesh and highlighted the systematic encroachment of tribal land by Forest Department under the guise of Reserved Forest and implored the GBs to protect the lands still under their control by educating themselves on relevant laws. He also suggested introduction of provisions similar to that being offered to tribal communities protected under 5th Schedule of the Constitution.
Project Consultant, APSLSA Advocate Marie Riba spoke on POCSO Act and Legal Aid Counsel, APSLSA Advocate Raknu Konya spoke on Marriage Registration under Special Marriage Act, 1954 and Arunachal Pradesh Recording of Marriage Act, 2008. Gauhati High Court, Itanagar Permanent Bench Advocate Jumgam Jini took a session on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
More than 200 GBs from 20 districts participated in the online refresher training.
