Itanagar, Aug 30: Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) organized a one-day online state consultative meeting on ‘Legal Literacy for Gaon Buras and Buris of Arunachal Pradesh’ here on Sunday.
GB representatives from 14 districts participated in the meeting where the objective was to share the initiatives taken by APSLSA in terms of training, best practices and success stories on legal empowerment and understanding the gaps in legal literacy for ensuring more effective roles of GBs. 
Member Secretary APSLSA Jaweplu Chai highlighted the initiatives taken by the authority in training the GBs on legal literacy and informed that training for 484 GBs covering 22 districts under the project ‘Training of Gaon Buras and Buris, the traditional village council system of Arunachal Pradesh' has been conducted so far.  
Commissioner of Investment Planning, Agriculture Production and Chairman APSSB, Prashant S. Lokhande highlighted the importance of GBs in administration of justice at all levels and opined that apart from resolving community adisputes, GBs have many additional roles for the betterment of society. He also advised them to pay attention to the gender aspect while exercising their duties.
DC Lower Subansiri Swetika Sachan asked the GBs to strictly follow the Assam Frontier Regulation (AFR) 1945 to ensure that any judgement passed by them doesn’t appear for further appeal at the DC office. 
Capital SP Tumme Amo while opining that GBs are like police in areas with no police station, requested them to cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order at community level. 
District & Session Judge, Pasighat cum Chairman, DLSA East Siang Budi Habung spoke on the changing roles and responsibilities of the GBs with the arrival of judiciary bodies in the state and the need for conducting more training to promote awareness with regards to their functions and powers. Secretary APWWS Kani Nada Maling and Professor Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies Dr. Jumyir Basar shared their views on the issues and challenges of the GBs and stressed there should be no political influence during their appointment. 
General Secretary, All Arunachal Pradesh Gaon Buras Welfare Association Tache Lombi and other GB representatives shared their best practices and success stories and how legal literacy programmes have helped them in delivering duties. They suggested that more training should be conducted at Circle and Village levels on laws and schemes, especially on the role of GBs under AFR1945. Apart from the GBs, representatives of the DCs of Tawang, East Siang, Lower Subansiri districts and various judicial officers participated online. 
This meeting was organized in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Union Ministry of Law and Justice under the ‘Access to Justice- North East and Jammu & Kashmir’ project. APSLSA PR
