Tawang, Dec 12: A two-day legal literacy cum training programme on ‘Synergy between Customary Practices and Formal Laws’ for the Gaon Burahs and Gaon Buris of Tawang and West Kameng districts commenced today here at Zomkhang Hall conducted by Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA).
The programme was a part of the ‘Access to Justice: North East and Jammu & Kashmir (A2J NE & JK) Project’ which has been supported by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, GoI. Member Secretary, APSLSA Budi Habung informed about the aims and objectives of the programme and the importance of judiciary, functioning of the institution of Gaon Burah since time immemorial, Assam Frontier Regulation Act 1945 and other related topics. Deputy Commissioner Tawang Sang Phuntsok was the Chief Guest and Superintendent of Police B. Kamduk was the Guest of Honour. SP while speaking about the importance of the institution of Gaon Burah said that as an institution it has a neutral character and always proved to be an effective mediator between villagers and administration. DC in his address said, “This function was supposed to be graced by Chief Justice of Guwahati High court, but due to bad weather he couldn’t make it, but this reflects the importance of this programme and the institution of the Gaon Burah.”
He further requested the Gaon Burahs to be attentive and learn from the Resource Persons during the programme to enrich their knowledge. DIPRO
