Yazali, Jan 17: Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) kick-started its Legal Awareness Programme for Lower Subansiri, Kamle and Upper Subansiri districts today.
During the seven-day tour, APSCW team will conduct awareness programmes at Ziro, Raga, Daporijo, Dumporijo and Nacho. Addressing the gathering at the launch here at the Yazali Indoor Stadium, Commission’s Chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi exhorted the parents to not discriminate between sons and daughters. “Equality should start from home. It is then the society as a whole will be able to come out of this vicious circle of discrimination,” she said. “It is very essential for women to be independent in life and since our society is in a transitional period, lot of reformations are needed to be made pertaining to customary laws of marriage, polygamy etc,” she added while exhorting the womenfolk to be educated for making their own living. Chairperson further appealed all to be aware of their rights and protections provided by various acts and stressed on smooth functioning of women welfare societies in districts and further appealed the Yachuli branch to induct fresh faces who are educated and will play proactive roles for women’s welfare.
Various Resource Persons presented Power Points on multiple topics pertaining to upliftment of women in society. SP Dr. Hemant Tiwari spoke about crimes against women and actions initiated by the government and Legal Adviser, APSCW Karmu Choten dwelt on Compulsory Registration of Marriage & free legal aid, Maternity Benefit Act,1961 etc. Advocate and member DLSA Toko Nikam spoke about customary practices specially regarding marriage and land laws and Deputy Director, Industries Gyati Kacho highlighted various government schemes for women. Issues such as drug abuse/alcoholism and its effect on society and functions of women NGOs and SHGs in curbing such nuisances were elaborated by Dr. Toko Papu and Hoksum Ori.
