Ziro, Jan 18: Continuing with their efforts to impart legal awareness on various women rights, Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) today conducted a one-day legal awareness programme at Abotani Hall in Hapoli in collaboration with District Administration and the National Commission for Women.
APSCW Chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi called for concerted efforts from all sections of society to empower women that would lead them towards a respectful life. “Empowerment process starts from home and treating a son and a daughter equally at home and teaching sons to respect women are the basics for avoiding gender discrimination in society,” she added. Terming excessive bridal price, early marriages, extra-marital affairs and financial dependency on husband as causes for physical, mental and emotional abuses of women, she appealed for minimizing all these for women empowerment. She also appealed the police department to expedite women related crime cases.
Terming the Goan Buras and Buris as guardians of law at grassroots level, she requested them to be proactive in curbing crimes against women. While informing about various recommendations forwarded by APSCW to the government, she informed that soft loans for women entrepreneurs, 33% job reservation for women, modifications in customary laws that are detrimental to women, establishment of family courts, rehabilitation centres, forensic labs and district grievances cells have been apprised to the state government.
Resource Persons presented Power Points on various topics pertaining to upliftment of women in society as a part of the programme. APSCW member Techi Hunmai dwelt at length about the powers and functions of the Commission.
OC, Ziro Taniya Uli spoke about crimes against women and actions initiated by the government while Legal Advisor, APSCW Karmu Chotten dwelt on Compulsory Registration of Marriage, Free Legal Aid and Maternity Benefit Act 1961. APSCW member Likha Joya discussed on the issue of sexual harassment in workplace and preventive measures available. Advocate & member DLSA, Toko Nikam spoke about customary practices especially regarding marriage and land laws and Deputy Director, Industries Gyati Kacho highlighted the government schemes available for women. Dr. Roto Robo while speaking about drug abuse and alcoholism, appealed parents to guide and counsel their children before they get trapped in the menaces.
SDO Ziro B. Tawsik, EACs Tame Yajum and Priscilla Tayeng, HoDs, representatives from AWAZ and APWWA Ziro unit, members from NGOs, SHGs, Anganwadi workers and public attended the programme. Dipro
