KALAKTANG, Sep 23: Chairperson of the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW), Radhilu Chai Techi while addressing a mammoth gathering today here in West Kameng district on the eve of a day-long Legal Awareness Programme, has underscored the need to do away with the system of discrimination between a boy and a girl child for ensuring gender equality.
She observed that it was high time for people to change their mind set and adopt a more educated, logical, and reformist approach. Dwelling on laws related to women, the Chairperson not fully satisfied with the appointment of CDPOs as Protection Officers urged the state government for appointment of Independent Protection Officers which would facilitate full-time involvement for the cause.
Further, she advocated for Short Stay Homes for the distressed and 33% reservation in government jobs for women which would go a long way in making them financially independent and an equal partner in nation building.
Commission members Techi Hunmai and Hoksum Ori spoke on powers & functions of APSCW and shared their experiences of  working with NGOs & SHGs. Advocate Karmu Chotton spoke on Compulsory Registration of Marriage, Free Legal Aid and Maternity Benefit Act 1961. While the Skill Development (Industrial & Vocational Training) and various schemes of the government for women were deliberated by DDI P Lama, Deputy SP J Netan elaborated on POCSO Act 2012. ADC Kalaktang Techu Aran observed that unlike mainland India, discrimination in tribal society is minimal but hoped that efforts of the Commission would hopefully succeed in bringing the women folk at par with their male counterparts. Moderated by APSCW Chairperson, an interactive session with Amate Association members, NGOs, SHGs and girl students of GHSS Kalaktang was also conducted.
The day-long programme was organized by APSCW in collaboration with the Amate Association, Kalaktang and National Commission for Women, New Delhi. DIPRO
