NAHARLAGUN, May 13: Upscaling the state-wide drive against unfair trade practices, Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs during surprise simultaneous inspections of trading premises in all districts on Wednesday booked 20 traders for violation of various provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
In Capital Complex, a team of officers led by Assistant Controller, Papum Pare district Amrit Taba, Inspectors Debia Tana & G. Singpho and TA Er. Sangio Talar assisted by police inspected about 80 trading premises at Chimpu, Gohpur Tinali and Chandranagar areas and booked 16 traders under various provisions of the    Legal Metrology Act, 2009 for selling packaged commodities especially aerated cold drinks at exorbitant prices and for using defective weighing scales.
14 retail traders have been booked for overcharging aerated cold drinks while one was booked for using defective electronic balance. One of the traders who pretended as a wholesale dealer was found selling cold drinks having MRP of Rs. 90 at Rs. 800 per crate of 9 bottles by giving a marginal profit of 1.10 per bottle to retailers while retaining for himself Rs. 4.40 per bottle profit margin offered by the agency, said Taba. “He was neither an authorized wholesale nominee of the agency nor had any trading license for selling cold drinks as a wholesaler,” he added.
Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs has made it clear that the drive to thwart the tendencies of overcharging of commodities will continue until normalcy is attained. Taba expressed concern over the rampant overpricing and fleecing of people on the pretext of short supply during the current crisis and reiterated that the Department has taken it as a challenge to crack the unauthorized involvement of middlemen in the supply chain in the guise of wholesale dealers. Observing it as one of the root cause of overpricing particularly in the Capital Complex, he cautioned the retailers not to buy from any party unless the retail margin as offered by the manufacturer is guaranteed.

Meanwhile, the Legal Metrology team of Lower Dibang Valley district led by Assistant    Controller Debojit Lingi during their inspection at Upper Market in Roing booked 4 traders for violating the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. LM& CA Dept. PR
