ITANAGAR, Dec 8: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) comprising various constituent units from the Northeast region including the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) will observe December 11 as Black Day across the region as a mark of protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act which was passed on the same day in the Rajya Sabha in 2019.
Terming the law “draconian” in its press statement, NESO said despite relentless opposition from the indigenous people of the Northeast against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, the Central government paid little heed and passed it in the Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019. The day will be observed as Black Day all throughout the region to protest against the Act through display of black flags and black banners in all important locations of the seven states, the release stated. “The symbolic protest is intended to give a loud message to the Central government that we are against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and also to remind our people and the coming generations of the political injustice meted out to the indigenous people of the Northeast,” the release added.
The other constituents of NESO which will participate in observing the Black Day are Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Tripura Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and Garo Students’ Union (GSU).
