ITANAGAR, Jan 3: Takam Tatung, the former AAPSU President who made the state proud by winning a gold medal in the 2nd International Karate Championship 2019 held at Udaipur in Rajasthan was accorded a warm reception today at the Naharlagun Helipad upon his return to the state.
Speaking to the media, Tatung said that his winning gold at the ripe age of 38 sends the message that age cannot be a hurdle if there is enough will and determination to win and this feat should act as a big encouragement to the state’s youths. On taking forward sports in the state, he said that he will appeal the Chief Minister to capitalize on the sports-week culture in schools, adding that engaging youths in such activities will curtail the abuse of drugs and alcohol among them.
Organized by the All India Shotokan Karate-Do Sports Association, the tournament took place from December 26 to 28 and Tatung clinched gold after defeating his opponent from Nepal in the 76-80 weight category. Dr Tassar Tania, who participated in the championship along with Tatung also won gold after defeating his opponent from Bangladesh in the 61-65 weight category.
