ITANAGAR, May 5: West Siang District Police today refuted the allegations of ‘police excesses’ levelled against them by the Intellectual Support Group (ISG) and has termed them as ‘false & concocted, without any substance’.
In a release issued by the West Siang Police this evening, it said that they are in a position of sharing only a few details and cannot disclose the larger part since the investigation is currently on. As per the release, on March 25 a written complaint was received from Bajum Bogo informing that a mob of unknown miscreants has assaulted him and robbed a sum of Rs 60 lakhs and his personal belongings from his possession, while he was in his hotel room. In this connection a case was registered vide Aalo PS Case no. 23/19 U/S 452/395/323/34 IPC. Acting swiftly, the police arrested three persons within three days with the help of information received from the eyewitnesses and footages of CCTV camera seized from the hotel premises. The interrogation of the arrested persons revealed the involvement of more persons in the dacoity.
As most of the suspects in the case belong to two villages namely Tego Gamlin and Laggi Gamlin, two raids were conducted in Laggi Gamlin village by local police. The first raid was conducted on April 7 at around 1200hrs during day time in search of the prime suspect. But the suspect could not be found in the village and it later transpired that the accused persons had managed an escape into the jungle area sighting the police vehicle. The topography of the area is such that any vehicle coming to the village can be seen well in advance giving enough time to the suspects to disappear into the thick forests in the vicinity. Because of these factors, the need for a second raid arose and was conducted on the night of May 1. The investigation team visited only one house which happens to be that of the prime suspect and that too in proper uniforms emblazoned with their name plates and ranks as per police procedure.
Elaborating further on the details of the raid, the release adds that the police team acted swiftly on receipt of a tip-off regarding presence of a suspect in the village and reached there and entered the house strictly as per the provisions of CrPC. Sharing of information with the village members would have compromised the attempt and the efforts behind it. Moreover, revealing the names of the suspects and other case details is not desirable from the point of view of investigation. Also, during such cases requiring fast action, police on receipt of intelligence input can enter the premise of the suspect and arrest even without an arrest warrant, the release clarified.
Police highly respect the rights of all citizens equally and in the meanwhile requests civil society to come forward and cooperate in solving such heinous cases, which is indeed expected of a civilized society. Police does not differentiate an accused on the basis of caste, creed or political affiliation and its action is legal, bonafide and as per due procedures and is open to scrutiny by any court of law, the release said.
