Khonsa, Jul 22: The victims of the infamous Longding market acid attack case, which was also the first of its kind in the state finally got justice on Wednesday when the District and Sessions Judge, Khonsa H Kashyap convicted the prime accused and his accomplice on charges of criminal conspiracy and causing grievous physical injuries.
The duo Nipen Das @ Kala and Ahon Wangsa were sentenced to a rigorous imprisonment of fourteen years along with a fine of Rs.12 lakhs as compensation to the victims for meeting medical expenses. The gruesome incident dates back to February 3, 2019 when one Shehnaj Hussain filed an FIR at the Longding Police Station alleging that some unknown miscreants had thrown acid on Anwar Uddin at Longding market. On receipt of the FIR, a case vide Longding PS No. 07/2019 was registered u/s 326A of the IPC and as per details, the victim Anwar Uddin, his brother Aftar Uddin and four others sustained grievous injuries due to the acid attack. Head, face, neck and chest of Anwar Uddin were severely burnt causing disfigurement of his facial appearance which also led to prolonged treatment at ICU for several months and three plastic surgeries.
After completing the investigation, IO Longding PS SI J Wangsu submitted a chargesheet against the prime accused Nipen Das alias Kala and his accomplices Ahon Wangsa and Puman Wangnow. It was revealed that both Nipen and Anwar Uddin had mobile shops at Longding market and the grisly attack was the fallout of a business rivalry between them. It also transpired that Nipen engaged Ahon Wangsa for throwing acid on Anwar Uddin. On receipt of the chargesheet, JMFC, Longding Epi Kapu took cognizance of the offence and forwarded the case to the District and Sessions Court Khonsa for trial and disposal. During the entire trial process all the accused remained in judicial custody.
The hearing of the case was conducted through virtual mode using videoconferencing due to the lockdown. Puman Wangnow, the other co-accused was acquitted as no criminal charges could be proved against him. DIPRO
