ITANAGAR, Sep 16:  All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) will press the state government to frame law in the State Assembly on the issue of offspring’s of APST mother and Non-APST father enjoying benefits in the state.

Addressing a press conference today, President AAPSU, Hawa Bagang informed that during the recently held consultative meeting where at least 49 organizations including Community based organizations, the house agreed to support the issue.

‘We have also directed the district units to collect relevant information of such cases. Within two months, we will submit the list to the state government for immediate action against those misusing APST rights,’ he asserted.

‘In our tribal society, it is customary for women as well as their children to bear the surname and inherit properties of the husband/father. We are not against inter-cultural marriages but they cannot avail APST benefits as soon as they get married to a Non-APST,’ said President.

Furthermore, the Union announced to launch the second phase of Operation Clean Drive (OCD) shortly after meeting with the state government. ‘We are not against anyone but we are against illegal intruders. Whatever we are doing today is to protect the future generations,’ he added.

Informing about the other resolution taken during the consultative meeting, General Secretary Tobom Dai informed that, AAPSU along with all CBOs have unanimously decided to press for amendment in Arunachal Pradesh State Act 1986 and for codification of Customary Laws.

‘Before going for any concrete decision there will be a Committee who will do proper research on the Act and then submit the report to the state government,’ asserted Dai.

Further, the house also decided to advise the state government to issue directives to ban rampant killing of the state animal—Mithun.

‘Other than ritual ceremony, the house has decided to ask the government to ban the slaughtering of Mithuns for commercial consumption,’ informed the AAPSU General Secretary.
