ITANAGAR, Jul 1: Reiterating its demand for an immediate declaration of lockdown in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has urged the Capital Complex District Administration to impose a total lockdown for at least 3-7 days as a solution for thwarting a possible Covid-19 community transmission after two healthcare workers tested positive.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, AAPSU General Secretary Tobom Dai said that demand for a complete lockdown of the state capital is being made considering the present situation. “If not dealt appropriately, it may endanger the lives of thousands of people living in the Capital region,” he opined. Pursuing the same issue, the union representatives also met the Itanagar Capital Complex (ICC) Deputy Commissioner Komkar Dulom on Tuesday.
Vice President (Admin.) AAPSU, Meje Taku said that lockdown is necessary to enable the concerned authorities to track down whoever came in contact with the duo. Justifying his demands, Taku underlined that the lockdown would be helpful in breaking the chain of a possible community transmission. He further urged the denizens to refrain from creating misunderstanding and fear psychosis on social media about the positive cases. “There have been reports that many people are targeting the health workers. But we should keep in mind that they have been doing their duties at the Covid Care Centres (CCCs) to save lives and at this time all should support them,” Taku appealed.
AAPSU President Hawa Bagang regretted that despite a surge of Covid-19 cases in the ICR, denizens are behaving as if nothing has happened and are freely flouting the compulsory preventive protocols such as maintaining social distancing and wearing masks. “Covid-19 directives were strictly followed by the people when the state was in lockdown, but now when the positive cases are rising rapidly, no one is following the guidelines,” he expressed surprise, appealing all citizens to follow the preventive instructions strictly.
Bagang also urged the District Administration to arrange adequate accommodation and other necessary facilities for the healthcare workers fighting the pandemic. “We would also like to request the concerned authority not to allow the healthcare workers deployed in high-risk environs or taking care of positive patients to be allowed to go to their homes before conducting proper testing and screening,” he added.
Expressing their steadfast stand on the issue, the AAPSU General Secretary asserted that if necessary, the union will announce the lockdown in the ICR after consulting with the CBOs and other organizations.
