ITANAGAR, Mar 12: A three-member team from the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) led and coordinated by its Women Cell General Secretary Kipa Yanu participated in the recently concluded 2-Days State Level Seminar on Customary Practices, Property Rights of Women and Girl Child in context of Arunachal Pradesh. The said event was organized by the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLA) from March 9-10 at Itanagar.
Speaking on the second day of the seminar, AAPSU Women Wing supported the call for property rights of the girl child but she also at the same time appealed to the APSCW and all other members present to not seek for framing any legislation in a hurry.
There are numerous cases of APST women getting married to outsiders. In such scenarios, utmost precautions have to be taken. She suggested conditional property rights to be given to the girl child of the state considering the unique tribal nature of the state and also to empower the girl child. An appeal for property & other rights for widows, daughters born in family with no male heirs and the girl child who are unmarried throughout their lives was also made during the seminar on behalf of the AAPSU Women Cell.
While welcoming the initiative taken by the APSCW for organizing the program, the Union has stressed on more discussions, consultations among the various stakeholders as well as awareness among the masses while coming up with any legislations with regards to Customary Practices, Property Rights of Women and Girl Child.
