ITANAGAR, Dec 11: Joining the rest of the North-eastern students fraternity, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union under the banner of North East Students’ Organization (NESO) observed Black Day against the forceful passing of the draconian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) last year by the Centre .
Adressing a gathering, General Secretary-AAPSU Tobom Dai elaborated that the Centre had on December 11 last year passed the controversial bill in the Rajya Sabha despite stiff opposition and violent protests from all across the North East and other corners of the country. "To give a strong message to the government of India that the opposition to the bill continues, organizations from North East under the banner of NESO observed Black Day by displaying black flags and banners in their respective areas," said Dai.
Coordinator NESO- Pritam Sonam said "The fight is not over yet; NESO will observed 11 December as black day every year to remind the central government that a law has been passed despite strong opposition by the citizens."
NESO started its agitation against CAA in 2016 and also attended dozens of meeting with the central government representatives but they never paid heed to our voices, added Pritam. Such protests will continue. We don’t want violence, but if the central government want us to take extreme steps, we are ready for that also. We won’t hesitate from taking extreme steps against CAA, he cautioned.
He further urged the state government to clarify on Chakma –Hajong refugee issue and the legitimacy and protection under the Inner Line Permit.
