ITANAGAR, Aug 20: In view of Medical Council of India’s decision to allocate lesser number of seats in the current academic session of 2019-20 as compared to the previous 2018-19 academic session for Arunachal Pradesh under Central Pool MBBS/BDS quota, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has demanded continuance of the existing quota structure.
In a press release issued today, AAPSU said that although Medical Council of India (MCI) allotted 25 MBBS and 3 BDS seats in the previous session, it has denied to allocate the same numbers in the current academic session for Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), the first State owned medical college which started its academic session from August 2018 with an annual intake of 50 students. The union has pointed out that even if according to MCI norms, MBBS seats from the Central Pool Quota will not be provided to State once the medical college is established, but since TRIHMS is yet to be fully recognized by MCI, a denial of allocation of seats will prove to be totally disadvantageous for the state’s indigenous students and dash their dreams of becoming doctors.
In this regard, keeping in tune with the earlier request placed by the Directorate of Medical Education to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI, AAPSU has demanded for allocation of seats for next four years till TRIHMS is fully recognised by MCI. In this context, AAPSU has cited Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nada’s letter dated August 6, 2018 (FTS NO. 1004772/2018/VIP/HFM) to the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh where he acknowledged the need for the allocation of Central Pool Quota seats and also the need for increasing the number of seats from the current 50 to 100. It has also been brought to AAPSU’s knowledge that MCI had given green signal for approval of 100 seats in TRIHMS, however due to inadequate infrastructure, such enhanced allocation has not been implemented, the release added.
In view of the above development, AAPSU has demanded that Government of Arunachal Pradesh should take necessary steps and apprise the Central government to continue with the existing quota of medical seats for the larger welfare of the state’s students. AAPSU PR
