ITANAGAR, Dec 28: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has urged the state government to take urgent steps to curb the rampant sale of wildlife meat in markets which has seen an alarming increase during the current festive season.
In a press release issued today, the union while drawing attention of the state government regarding the tendency of hunters to sell wildlife meat in festive seasons recalled that in previous years too it called for stringent action against the trend.
“In 2018, the union raised the issue in a consultative meeting involving all community based organisations and political parties of the state wherein the house took a serious note to ban rampant slaughtering and selling of mithuns and wild animals and birds in letter and spirit,” the release said.
The union while stating that it’s the temptation of huge profit that lures people to go for wildlife hunting, cited the examples of deer which fetches Rs 20000-25000 per animal or Rs 1000 in case of small birds. AAPSU President Hawa Bagang said that both community level and government initiatives are necessary to discourage the locals from hunting by involving the community based organizations and the Union.
“This should be followed by stringent and immediate action against all those involved in wildlife hunting under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and other regulations, setting up of fast-track courts to try the cases and imposition of ban on open selling and slaughtering of mithuns except for traditional and customary purposes,” the AAPSU President added.
