ITANAGAR, Jan 29 : Expressing its concerns against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has written a letter today to Mukut Mithi ,the lone Rajya Sabha MP from the state .
The bill which was passed in the Lok Sabha recently despite serious opposition from the people all across the north east, intends to confer citizenship to the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, Afghanistan & Pakistan who belong to Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Jain & Parsi religious communities.
The amendment bill proposes to grant permanent citizenship to these immigrants after six years of residency in India instead of eleven years as prescribed by the current Citizenship Act, 1955.
AAPSU under the aegis of the North East Students' Organization (NESO) along with the other constituent organizations like the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Naga Students' Federation (NSF), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Twipra Students' Federation (TSF), Khasi Students' Union (KSU) & Garo Students' Union (GSU) have been rigorously protesting against the CAB 2016.
While drawing the attention of the MP towards this sensitive subject matter, the union stressed for the urgent need to rollback the bill and ensure its rejection in the Rajya Sabha as it is unconstitutional, anti-tribal & anti north-east. Arunachal Pradesh is already plagued by the Chakma-Hajong refugee imbroglio since the past fifty years and the union fears about every possibility of the refugees already settled in the state taking advantage of this bill as the Chakmas are predominantly Buddhist and the Hajongs practise Hinduism.
In addition to the appeal made by the AAPSU for expressing strong objections to the CAB 2016 when it is tabled in the Rajya Sabha, the MP was also strongly urged to pursue the concerns of the people of Arunachal Pradesh with other political parties and central government.
