ITANAGAR, Mar 11: A horrific case of death of a girl child here in the capital allegedly due to physical abuse including sexual , has come to light, the details of which are more than enough to unnerve the state’s civil society.
Baby DD, the 6-year old girl child from Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district died allegedly under mysterious circumstances at the residence of her close relatives in the capital. Spearheading the fight for justice on behalf of the aggrieved family of the victim, Dubi Welfare Society (DWS) has appealed to the Superintendent of Police, ICR to expedite the investigation process.
According to the letter sent to the ICR SP by DWS which accompanied a photo of the victim's dead body; she was the daughter of Tedam Dubi residing in Jeram village, Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district. After her mother’s demise, the victim was sent to the residence of one Michael Garam and his wife Jeemi Hangkar Garam by her father with the hope that the couple who also happens to be his close relatives would take care of her educational and other needs by playing the role of guardians.
However, after a stay of a month and 10 days, on March 1 last, Baby’s lifeless body was found at the said residence with bruises and cut marks all over her body and even her private part was also found to be badly bruised.  Prima facie it is evident that she was physically and mentally tortured for several days prior to her painful death, the letter mentioned.
The FIR (No. 18/21, dated March 1, 2021) invoking Section 376 AB/ 302/34 of the IPC along with Section 6 of the POCSO Act was lodged at Itanagar Women Police Station by Kulin Dubi, victim’s elder brother. Throwing the weight of suspicion on Michael Garam, his wife Jeemi Hangkar and her brother Jeeking Hangkar who also stays with the duo in the said residence, the complaint letter seeking registration of the FIR dated March 1, 2021 has pointed  to the trio as no other person resided in the house during the time the heinous crime took place.
Terming Baby’s unnatural death as a “premeditated murder,” the DWS in the letter has explicitly said there are strong reasons to believe that the child was sexually assaulted before the dastardly act and subsequent murder. While urging the police department to investigate the case professionally for ensuring exemplary punishment for the culprits of the barbaric act, the Society has said they are waiting for an early  justice.
Speaking to Eastern Sentinel, General Secretary, Dubi Welfare Society (DWS) Jali Dubi Jeram  disclosed that  all the alleged accused have been  arrested  by the police based on the FIR. However, we have urged the investigation agency and the judiciary not to grant bail to any of the three accused and the trial be held in a fast-track court so that exemplary punishment can be meted out to all the accused involved in the crime.
No innocent soul should be a victim of such crime or incident in future, he said while informing that the autopsy report has been handed over to the police.
SDPO K Sikom has confirmed that three accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.
