5th Ziro Butterfly Meet concludes

 

YAZALI, Sep 24:The fifth edition of Ziro Butterfly Meet at Yazali concluded on Sunday with a total of 171 different species of butterflies documented from Yazali area during the two days meet. Important species included the White Dragontail, Veined Jay, Bispot, Black Prince, Large Yeoman, Tiger Hopper, Red Base, Jezebel, Grey Pansy and Chocolate Tiger, among others.

The valedictory function was held in the presence of Koj Rinya (DFO, Ziro), Bengia Mana Sonam (Asst. Director, Tourism), Sarla Khaling (Regional Director, ATREE) and host of other senior leaders of Yazali area. Certificates of participation were handed out to all and prizes for photography of the rarest butterfly and the most common varieties of butterflies were given away.

The participants were overwhelmed by the meet, not only because of the rich butterfly diversity of the area, but also by the hospitality of the people. Involvement of the local people and the school children were the highlights of the meet.

The meet came up with a set of recommendations, including submission of proposals to the government for designation of Kaiser-e-Hind as the State Butterfly and the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary as a Butterfly Sanctuary.

Koj Rinya, DFO appreciated Ngunu Ziro and Panyor Solyoq for successfully organizing the meet and congratulated all the participants. She welcomed all to visit Talle Wildlife Sanctuary where some of the rarest butterflies in the world are found. She resolved to put forward the proposal of the state butterfly as well as the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary as a Butterfly Sanctuary.  Whole of Lower Subansiri district, she said, could be developed as a butterfly hub.

Isaac Kehimkar, the Butterfly Man of India, made a powerpoint presentation on the importance of butterflies in the ecosystem and advocated for seeking funds from various corporates under CSR for butterfly conservation.

Earlier, the participants from various parts of the country including Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam, dressed in their traditional attires, displayed their culture.

NgunuZiro has been organizing the Ziro Butterfly Meet every year in order to spread awareness about the importance of all creatures in ecosystem and to promote conservation. The sixth edition of Ziro Butterfly Meet will be held at Ziro in 2019. 

The fifth edition of the Ziro Butterfly Meet was sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh as a part of the Paryatan Parv being observed all over the country from September 16 to 27. Other sponsors include Taba Apa, State Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE) and the Department of Forests & Environment, Government of Arunachal Prades
