Longding, Jan 9: In a major success against militancy, Longding district police and 6th Assam Rifles in a joint operation apprehended two active underground (UG) cadres of the NSCN-IM and NSCN-U from Votnu village under Pongchau Circle of the district on January 7 last.
The two arrestees, SS Lieutenant Panpoh Pansa (30) and SS Private Pegang Gangsa (23) were regularly engaged in extortion activities from the local villagers. Based on intelligence input and after meticulous monitoring of the movements of the two cadres the joint operation was launched at around 1950 hours and after a relentless pursuit they were apprehended. From Pansa a Chinese made 0.32mm pistol, 2 live rounds of ammunition and a smartphone were recovered. A similar Chinese made pistol, 1 live round of ammunition and a smartphone containing a memory card were seized from Gangsa. The smartphones will aid the police in investigation process since they have been found to contain several contact numbers of the outfits. A case [No. 02/21 U/S 384 IPC R/W sec 10/13 of UAP Act and 25(1) A of Arms Act] has been registered at Pongchau.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that Pansa was recruited in NSCN-IM in 2007 and Gangsa joined NSCN-IM in 2018 but later defected to NSCN-U in 2019. DIPRO
