2 active NCSN (R) cadres, accomplices nabbed in counter-insurgency operation in Tirap

KHONSA, Apr 7: In yet another success against insurgency in Tirap district, a special operation conducted jointly by the Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles and Khonsa Police during the intervening night of April 5-6 led to the arrest of two active NCSN (R) cadres and two Over-Ground Workers (OGWs), one of whom is an acquaintance of Self Styled Captain Ravi Wangnow, a ‘Wanted’ cadre in the killing of MLA Tirong Aboh.
The two active and hardcore NCSN (R) insurgents have been identified as No-16698, Self Styled Sergeant Major Khunpong Kanglom (28), from Changlang district and No-18228, Self Styled Sergeant  Kamnog Pantha (30), also from Changlang. The two OGWs were Janye Agi (26) and Tekhun Kitnya (20), both hailing from Tirap district. The said special operation was launched at 2230 hours on April 5 in a swift manner based on a reliable intelligence input that resulted in apprehension of the cadres and recovery of one M16 rifle, one HK series rifle, two .32 mm pistols along with 147 units of live rifle ammunition, two units of pistol ammunition and miscellaneous items like ration, clothing and personal documents.
During the operation a column of troops stopped the suspected speeding vehicle and all individuals were asked to dismount for a checking. Sensing they have been trapped, one of the cadres tried to lob a hand grenade on the column, but his intention was foiled by a commander who overpowered him, averting a major casualty on the troops. On-spot interrogation of the cadres revealed that both of them are active functionaries of the NSCN (R) and had planned to move to Khonsa for extortion activities along with their two OGWs who were assisting them by ferrying in the vehicle. They further revealed they were in possession of other weapons along with ammunition and had hidden the same in the dense jungle between Thumjiang and Nogna. A subsequent search of the suspected area led to the recovery of a huge cache of  arms and ammunition. The arrest of Janye Agi who was driving the vehicle is a significant catch as he is an acquaintance of Ravi Wangnow, the cadre wanted in the killing of MLA Tirong Aboh in 2019. Interrogation has revealed that he had the intention to join the NSCN (IM) in near future.
The apprehended insurgents, OGWs along with the recoveries have been handed over to Khonsa Police Station for further interrogation. DIPRO
