ITANAGAR, May 11: The 1st Sub-Junior State Ranking Badminton Tournament concluded successfully today here at the MLA Cottage Badminton Hall in front of a huge gathering of sports lovers and a host of dignitaries.
A total of 144 players in both boys and girls sections from all across the state in six different events participated in the tourney, organized by Arunachal State Badminton Association (ABSA).
In under-13 Boys Doubles category, Geson Potom and Pakli Bagra emerged as winners with S Gongo and S Tamang coming runners-up. The third placed was shared by the duo of Chow Soijan Manlong and Nima Lama. The gold medal of under-13 boys category was also won by Pakli Bagra followed by his compatriot in doubles Geson Potom. Nabam Issac and Taku Manku bagged the bronze medal in the under-13 category.
In the girls category for the under-13 age group, Jamba Waii won her maiden gold of the tournament. The second place was bagged by Beryl Saring, followed by Boristha Boraguhai and Sonam Chotten in third position.
Samuel Tamang emerged as the winner in under-11 boys category. The second place of this category was clinched by Gunveer Gongo, followed by Licha Gomsh and Taku Manku in the third place. The gold medal of the girls section under this age group was won by Adam Doyom and the silver medal was bagged by Laa Nanu with Jessica Saring and Yami Riang sharing the third position.
In the under-9 boys category, Dindo Liggi won the gold medal and Promod Joshi silver medal. The bronze medal of this category went to Licha Polu and Joram Tado.
Referee Tania Yasap informed that a total of 8 events were scheduled to be held in the tournament but only six events could be held as the required minimum participants for the tournament was not registered in under-13 girls doubles and under-9 girls categories.
Meanwhile, the sitting MLA from Changlang, Tesam Pongte attending the tournament as chief guest expressed words of appreciation for the organizers for their efforts and dedication. “Winning and losing is a part of competition, and it’s our duty to guide the kids to cope with the situations of loss and victories,” added Pongte. Sitting MLA from Jairmapur, Laisam Simai, attending as guest of honour urged upon the parents and all stake holders to encourage their children in sports and avail the government quota of meritorious sportspersons of state for employment purposes.
Former Home Minister Kumar Waii who was also present shared the prospect of sports in the state. “Sports and tourism are something that any government needs to focus upon,” added Waii. He further stated that he is building a Badminton Academy in the state which is expected to be completed soon. “It is important that the young generation is provided with well-equipped infrastructure and world class coaches, so that they can represent the state and country,” said Waii.
Prizes, medals and certificates were distributed by the dignitaries and Waii also contributed cash prizes to all the medal winners from his part.
ASBA Secretary Bamang Tago, Joint Secretary Tenya Bagra were among others who addressed the gathering.
