Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Over the past few years it has been observed that there are some individual games where Arunachalees have performed exceptionally well. And among them, karate seems to be the one where the state is rapidly emerging as a national superpower. Not only karate, there are many such games requiring individual capability as the principal deciding factor for winnability, where the state’s aspirants can prove their mettle. The rising graphs of success, both in national and international arenas has also underscored the fact that given a more supportive environment in terms of training and infrastructure, these boys and girls will not let the state or country down and bring laurels consistently.

Karate will come in the forefront of any discussion as during a short span of time Arunachal has come intolimelight due to its enviable performance right from school games to various national level competitions.Among the most recent successes to name a few, it has bagged 17 medals including 10 gold in KAI Sub-junior and Senior National Karate Championship held in New Delhi in June this year. Proving their caliber at international level, state karatekas won 16 medals including 4 gold out of India’s tally of 59 in the 9th Commonwealth Karate Championship at Durban held in November/ December 2018. Khelo India Youth Games 2019 conducted in January this year also proved to be memorable for Arunachal where 14 medals were captured, with weightlifters the standout performers contributing as many as 9 of the total tally. It will be pertinent to mention that bulk of this state team in Khelo India edition were products of Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy, the only institute in state where training and coaching are imparted along with academics.

In this context the recent news that the state is going to have three more state-of-the-art sports academies is quite encouraging as because the games to be chosen in curricula are exclusively individual in character such as judo, karate, taekwondo, wushu, weightlifting and boxing. These are the games which demand core strengths of speed, agility, stamina, flexibility and muscular endurance and it has been proved time and again that Northeast people including Arunachalees possess them in adequate quantities. Only a little push will be enough to unveil their in-born yet untapped talents and only modern sports academies, preferably in all districts can be the most suitable route of scouting and nurturing these future champs.

If everything regarding training and allied infrastructure build-up are executed as per schedule in the run-up to 2024 National Games that Arunachal aspires to host, there is no reason why the state shouldn’t emerge as a powerhouse in these individual level winnable games.
