During the hiatus of more than a month since the June 15 mayhem of Indian troops in Galwan Valley, the flashpoint of the current Indo-China standoff, a state of calm prevailed. Counting on it, just at the moment when the citizens of the country have been inclined to believe that normalcy has been gained through negotiation efforts, China has again started behaving in an unjust manner leading to all the current noise. It has diluted its disengagement process as agreed upon after the aftermath causing a revisit of tension that has not only been the talk of the subcontinent, but also caused flutters in world geopolitics. It’s for this particular reason, various defence experts have been issuing caveats that, China, in any case can’t be a good boy overnight and hence, it’s paramount for India not to lower the guard at any cost. That the things are going to heat up more is evident from Defence Minister’s interaction with top IAF commanders on Wednesday wherein the message was loud and clear: make preparations for any eventuality. Tension and uncertainty has returned once more and it’s also going to be a major test for the ruling dispensation since, an impression that the Indian territories are absolutely impregnable under their rule has been embossed in the minds of the citizenry, thanks to the much-touted concept of 'surgical strikes'.
The genesis of the current complexity lies in the unexpectedly rigid stand taken by PLA’s South Xinjiang Military Region Commander during July 14 talks, the fourth in the ongoing series to de-escalate tensions. When the agreement for evacuation of troops by both countries up to a certain territorial point has been the guiding principle for accentuating normalcy, China, perhaps as a tool of furthering its instigative motive, has halted the procedure and retained its troops. After this and to reciprocate the move, Indian Army has been forced to retain its left-over troops at various extra divisions which have a number of friction points. As a whole, the current situation is packed with uncertainty making the further round of talks meaningless and in gravity, is just the same as it was since April, the culmination of which was the June 15 massacre.
A general perception has developed, which is also claimed by the ruling dispensation that the powerful players of world geopolitics like the US, Russia and Japan are India’s allies in the current face-off with China. If that is so, proof of this clout has to be proved on the ground by the government through its persuasive finesse.
Whether militarily or diplomatically, at the end of the day, all that matters is full maintenance of each and every inch of the country’s territories.
