Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Arunachal has seen a surge in Covid cases for two consecutive days i.e, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The two days combined saw the addition of 55 fresh infections. As anticipated by experts, the trend maybe signalling towards a possible third wave for the state.
As Covid cases surged across the country due to the Omicron variant; Rajasthan reported its first Covid death due to Omicron today. The writing is clear, the country must brace for another wave of this infectious pandemic.
It augurs well that Arunachal has taken stock of its preparedness. Though understood to be milder than the Delta, this new variant will poses greater challenge as studies have reported that Omicron variant largely evades immunity from past infection or two vaccine doses.
The new report (Report 49) from the Imperial College London COVID-19 response team estimates that the risk of reinfection with the Omicron variant is 5.4 times greater than that of the Delta variant. This implies that the protection against reinfection by Omicron afforded by past infection may be as low as 19%.
Given these findings, the fully vaccinated population must also take full precautions. Declining cases over the past few months in the state had restored normal life and with the festive season over we can expect more surge in Covid cases in the coming days.
Arunachal which faced a comparatively severe second Covid wave than the first must learn from its past experience. Covid Appropriate Behaviour and SOPs which have fallen out of practice must be adhered to. Masking and social distancing must be followed religiously.
