Arunachal Pradesh became the 15th state in India to have Tourist Police when Chief Minister Pema Khandu launched the Tourist Police on Friday. The other states are Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha to ensure the safety of tourists especially those visiting from abroad. And Arunachal holds the distinction of being the first state in the North East to have the tourist police even though there has been hardly any crimes against tourists in the state since the state and its people uphold the meaning of “adithi devo bhava” (the guest is equal to god) in its real sense with their hospitality and good behaviour. Another innovative move was also to launch the “Arunachal Suraksha App” which will bring instant relief to the tourists.

Arunachal Pradesh with its virgin forests, undulating mountains and bamboos in a cosmic dance is a tourism paradise in the country. No doubt the state has been witnessing a quantum jump in tourist arrivals. It recorded a leap in the number of tourist arrivals as around 26,00,000 domestic and 52,000 foreign tourists visited the state during 2017 with state exchequer receiving Rs. 17 crore as revenue from tour operators alone. Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who was earlier tourism minister, believes that the number of tourists will reach record number if the tourism potential of the state is completely exploited.

Khandu pins his hopes high on tourism sector, which he believes to be the most practical way to fire up the state’s economy followed by agriculture and allied sectors. Addressing the APTOA’s 12th Travel Congress at Itanagar in May this year, he called for sincere efforts to boost tourism sector and attaining exponential growth. He had said then, “we need to concentrate on tourism. Despite the increase in tourist inflow to the state, we are far behind when it comes to what we have to offer in terms of potential. With the immense potential available here we can attract tourists several times more than what we are doing right now.” Once the Trans Arunachal Highway work is finished the transportation bottleneck will be solved and Hollongi airport will be a big boost for the tourism sector in the state.
