If the stupendous victory clinched by AAP in Delhi elections attracted wide national attention, pushing even the great citizenship debate to the rear for a while and had supposedly given the nation a new genre of politics, Sunday afternoon’s oath taking ceremony also offered something new. This ‘new’ is the emergence of a leader who has shed his alleged antagonistic character and has declared himself open and accessible to all, particularly to his staunchest of detractors, only for the sake of furthering development. Arvind Kejriwal is the ‘man of the moment’, and if the ‘kaam ki rajneeti’ espoused by him doesn’t die an untimely death, there are solid prospects of his becoming ‘man of the future’ too.
The historic Ramlila Maidan in national capital which had seen many a memorable husting saw an extraordinary oath taking where, as if in a further validation of AAP’s declared brand of politics, which is only of development alone, invitees, among many bigwigs, had been 50 such hand-picked people, who according to Kejriwal are the real ‘Delhi ke Nirmatas’. By inviting them, who by profession are auto drivers, caretakers, sanitation workers, school teachers etc, AAP supremo has sent the message loud and clear- the party is primarily for these people, the real aam admi in every connotation. The ‘metamorphosis’ of Kejriwal, as defined by political observers, was also too conspicuous to escape attention. The once ‘anarchist’ or ‘great disrupter’ image will now follow question marks since he had called his political opponents to bury all differences and collaborate with his government for taking development in Delhi to greater heights, and above all sought blessings from Modi, his frontline political adversary. This modesty has been missing from Indian political milieu for long and in midst of the current air laced with high degrees of temerity and animosity, for common people, it has come as a bout of fresh air. Talking exclusively in context of economics, there might be tall differences regarding their politics of freebies, but that it has faithful and eager takers is evident from their sweeping victory itself.
Meanwhile, Delhi developments have triggered many new thoughts concerning national politics. Will the AAP, driven by this success go ahead to make a pan-India footfall and will Arvind Kejriwal emerge as a challenge to the Modi-Shah duopoly in coming days ? Although it will be too early to tilt towards a ‘yes’, it will be nothing surprising if that really happens, given the growing perception that common people are desperately seeking respite from the current nature of politics, which is grossly stricken with all sorts of ‘pseudos’, both in persona and in practice.
But, right now, the one practised by AAP is surely the politics of the moment and perhaps of the future also.
