It had been an extraordinary Saturday morning not only for Maharashtra but also for the entire country as it was beyond anyone’s wildest of imagination of the melodrama mixed with most unexpected twists that was in store, against which some of the most admired and must-watch thrillers of Hollywood and Bollywood   would seem minnows. BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, who had been taken to be out of the race for the coveted chair and been   playing the role of a fence-sitter is now the Chief Minister of Maharashtra with NCP’s Ajit Pawar as his deputy! If viewed in the light of the old saying   ‘Nothing is impossible in India politics’ and also in the context of the proverbial saying ‘politics make strange bedfellows’, this happening is nothing surprising. But if the full episode particularly its culmination is measured in moral parameters, it must be said that it wasn’t one of the most sunny day of the world’s largest democracy. And at the end of the day, however hard it may seem to gulp, the truth is ‘hunger for power’ which is regarded as a crude aspect in a democratic setup has overpowered   the refined elements of moral values and conscience which actually are the true contributors of its running and sustenance. This is an alarming sign and since it’s not the first-time or even a few and far between affair, it should be said that a great deal of thinking on a national scale is the demand of the time.

In the Maharashtra politics, BJP and Shiv Sena had been declared allies for long, ran government(s) on several occasions, fought the state elections jointly and people bestowed full faith in them by giving a further chance. But, the duo dishonoured the mandate and engaged in a wrangle over the ‘hot seat’ sharing that resulted in unfolding of an endless drama that went on for nearly a month. It was only on Friday, end of haze seemed to be in sight with the trio of NCP-Shiv Sena-Congress, the final formation all prepared to stake claim to form a government. But BJP has once again proved itself the smartest exponent  of that old saying that there is nothing ‘final’ in post-electoral politics in the country by engineering a crack in the NCP. This only hints that ‘poaching politics’ has once again been practised with elan, a solid indication that it’s a fault line that is rapidly widening within the democratic system, weakening it fundamentally.

Proving of majority, legal battles are the other side of the drama that will unfold shortly, and it’s not the end yet as perceived. But, looking at the murkier side of Indian politics, which is sadly proving to be the new normal, one can’t help but lament.
