Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Although Arunachal recorded the biggest single-day addition in its Covid-19 positive caseload on Monday which seemingly has elements to escalate worries, if the circumstances which led to this sudden spurt are analysed, it should be said it was not totally unexpected. This has actually been the pan-national trend after the states decided to allow entry of their respective people stranded outside. As such, for the state’s general populace, there is no point to give room for any added fear or panic, as it was perhaps inescapable. Anyway, in this newly emerging backdrop, the elemental precautionary aspects which somehow got diluted due to a prolonged enjoyment of ‘Covid free’ status have ‘thankfully’ once again assumed importance.

To understand Arunachal’s sudden spike in active cases in a more logical way and to drive home the point that fear, if at all any, is not exclusive to the state, it is necessary to  make an analytical assessment of the current national picture. Standing on the second day of Unlock 1.0, from the figures it is pretty clear that there might still be a lot of battle left for India to attain the psychologically soothing ‘flattening the curve’ goal. On the day itself, India crossed 2 lakh cases, which was roughly 1 lakh just fifteen days earlier and more disturbingly, for last three days, average daily additions have been more than 8,000 infections a day. Climbing up the ladder, the country is now the seventh-worst hit after the US, Brazil, Russia, the UK, Spain and Italy. In addition to this there are also wide differences of opinions by the health experts as to when the peak will actually arrive. But along with these disturbing facts, Union Health Ministry has shared the data that fatality rate in the country is 2.82 % which is one of the lowest in world and only 10 % of the population accounts for 50 % of  Covid linked deaths and as much as 73 % these casualties are due to pre-existing co-morbidities. As a whole, the full picture, as of now will elicit mixed feelings- uneasiness and hope almost in equal measure.

In case of Arunachal, it must be kept in mind that almost all the new cases are linked to the returnees and as they have been timely identified and segregated with follow-up medical attention, there is no logic for the citizens to get overwhelmed with unnecessary fear.

Newer studies keep suggesting that to tame the pandemic, there is no way but to stick to the preventive aspects.Keeping oneself as well as others safe through all the prescribed preventive protocols must therefore  be the one and only duty for all state’s citizens.
