Ending months of speculation, Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra has ultimately written to the government naming Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the senior most judge of the apex court, as his successor. Now Justice Gogoi will be sworn in on October 3. This is good news for the North East as Justice Gogoi is the first Chief Justice of India belonging to the region as he is from Dibrugarh district in Assam. Considered as a no-nonsense judge, the 64-year-old Justice Gogoi will have a 13-month term as CJI. Justice Gogoi’s tenure as CJI will be crucial in terms of restoring the credibility of the judiciary that was dented after the open rift between senior judges, including Justice Gogoi and CJI Misra. Justice Gogoi is outspoken but rarely indulgent.  And there are high expectations from him at a time when the country’s executive is at loggerheads with the judiciary. Many in the apex court are hopeful that Justice Gogoi will set the house in order.
With almost six vacancies in the Supreme Court currently, Justice Gogoi’s handling of the tug-of-war with the government over judicial appointments will be critical. Justice Gogoi is known to have little patience for government delays. At the same time, there is a ray of hope for states like Arunachal Pradesh which have been demanding a separate High Court for the state. At present, all the seven states in the region have only permanent benches attached to Gauhati High Court. Hopefully, Justice Gogoi may consider the case of the  region sympathetically.
His appointment is also crucial as it comes at a time when Assam is preparing to release a final National Register of Citizens (NRC), possibly by the end of the year. He is currently hearing the politically sensitive case related to the updating of the National Register of Citizens in Assam. This is one of the most important cases where four million people have found themselves aliens in their land. People expect Justice Gogoi to deliver justice to them.
