Arunachal along with the world is celebrating the International Workers’ Day or May Day today. Question is apart from the paraphernalia at a superficial level, does the day really hold any meaning?
Terming the labour community as the backbone of development is so clichéd, it has lost meaning.
The educated unemployed population in Arunachal which makes a substantial chunk of the overall population is facing a complex problem. Employment for youths here refers only to government jobs and no other work holds meaning. Every student aspires to become a government servant albeit unrealistic that a small state like Arunachal can barely accommodate the growing numbers.
The IT industry, call centres, retail and hospitality industry in metro cities are powered by a large number of people from Northeastern states. Why is it then that our youths known for their professionalism elsewhere cringe away at the mere thought of working in private set up back home?
Instead of waiting for a stroke of luck; Why not start a business, turn entrepreneur and generate employment opportunities for others as well.
The problem of unemployment can be solved with concerted efforts from both the state and the general public. Need is for people to think out-of-the-box and for the government to extend a helping hand after all a youth-turned-entrepreneur will generate employment for others as well effectively aiding the government in its duties.
Schemes such as the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Swavalamban Yojana (DDUSY) under which local entrepreneurs can avail bank loan ranging from Rs 10 lakhs to 1 crore with 30% subsidy is a great initiative but red tape and the long incubation period is an anti-thesis to the whole idea of helping the unemployed set out on their self-employment journey.
On labour day, a true tribute would be for us to introspect and ask ourselves whether, the catch phrase-dignity of labour- has really been internalized.
