The Aam Aadmi Party  has won the Delhi Assembly elections by taming the formidable saffron brigade masterfully. If this is the omnipresent talk all over the country right at the moment and will remain so for next few days, the question is how to describe this win. Phenomenal, stupendous, mind-boggling, extraordinary, fantastic… the list will be endless. But, each and all of them will fit to the occasion, such is the significance of this victory. And even if the next general election is still more than 4 years afar, few will question the after-effects this verdict can and will surely cast on the approaching national political scenario. A 60+ seat win out of 70 for AAP is no doubt a massive one by any standard, but doubtlessly, the biggest takeaway is far from the above numeric, which is its overarching influence on the way politics is practised in the country. People needs development and will vote only for them who keep promises and from now onwards the age-old practice of resorting to rhetoric on purposeless issues and hollow customary election-centric promises will yield nothing- Delhi election has shown where the inner message must be- shape up or ship out. This is altogether a new brand of matured political thinking and choice-making, which will surely find earnest takers in coming electoral battles.

The entire country has, during the past month or so, witnessed how the colours of campaign, characteristically, had been poles apart. AAP’s had been rather simple and there were hardly any ‘Chanakya-level’ strategies meant for baffling opponents. We have worked to our level best during past five years and had provided refurbished education, health, cheaper electricity, water and necessary amenities expected by a common citizen and we want to do more, so give us a further chance- that’s been their approach- low-pitched, yet polite and refined. BJP’s on the other hand had  been a grand affair with massive campaigns involving almost its full team of union ministers, 270 MPs and leaders and CMs to deliver, surprisingly, nothing notable about developmental agendas, but on issues such as wickedness of anti-CAA protests, nationalism in context of Pakistan and ‘discovery’ of anti-nationals in the national capital’s most admired learning institutions and many more such. Decency in speeches touched new lows and slogans such as “Goli Maro”, “Kejriwal a terrorist” were repeatedly chanted. But all strategies and hate-speeches had backfired.

This has been a unique election in every sense and will serve as a ‘ready reckoner’ for all- political parties as well as electorate. Delhi has shown that when it comes to electoral choice-making, it must be matured, informed and rational. The world’s largest democracy will be hugely benefited by taking cue from it.
