Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Since the day sometime in late December last year and thereafter when the world gradually started realising that a monster named coronavirus will indefinitely create havoc and torment in such an epic proportion, Friday had turned out to be the most catastrophic. When globally, more than 30,000 new Covid-19 cases were reported, in India it inflated by 63, making it the largest single-day increase till date for both, sending a more stronger signal that the pandemic is in no mood of subduing. At this critical moment when medical science hasn’t come up with anything hopeful, it’s clear that the only route of an escape is through following strictly a regimented life, however hard it may seem to be. If the virus can’t be killed, at least, things shouldn’t be done that would invite it- this is the essence that can be deciphered from the lengthening dos & don’ts chart issued by the medial fraternity. And as the wrath has now entered the phase when there will be more outbursts of momentum, next two to three weeks will throw a real challenge which holds true for the world and India alike.
Looking over the country’s situation, it seems a lockdown spread over the approaching weeks will be inescapable, dress rehearsal of which will be made on Sunday through the “Janata Curfew.” Appeals to stick to the list starting from social distancing to hand washing and all in between are flowing and there must be no uncertainty these will be the unputdownable determinants in India’s face-off with corona. It’s also time to revisit the realities of the country’s fragile public infrastructure, which, at any given point of time, usually remain overburdened with mammoth counts of cases of commonly curable illness. And during this extraordinary time, it’s imaginable how much stress will be exerted, if matters worsen. The greatest disadvantage for India, which medical experts are pointing out is the sheer density of population and given the highly transmissible nature of coronavirus, it will be real testing time indeed. Citizens’ respond will make much difference here since they will be the principal stakeholders in snapping the chain of spread and thereby easing in accomplishing the most vital assignment of the moment- containing community outbreak.
SEC has taken an appropriate decision by deferring panchayat and municipal elections. While looking at the country’s overall picture of respond to the crisis, it must be said there are instances where the clarion call of following instructions particularly social distancing are grossly being violated. Price will be hefty and has to be paid sooner or later, such is the virulent nature of Covid-19.
Arunachal, thankfully is free from it till date. To continue remaining so, it must take the regulatory pains for the next two weeks at least.
