Just immediately after completion of the general elections 2019, which was a massive exercise by any standard, the country is all set to embark on yet another gargantuan activity which is known by the term of Economic Census. The word ‘census’ is known widely in public domain as the one concerning counting of heads of the country’s population, but this one is not that much talked about barring the academic circles. In spite of that, its importance is enormous for this huge country where economic activities of its people are as diversified and unique as the nation itself.
This is going to be the 7th edition and preparations through more than 6000 training workshops are in full swing in run up to the most critical part of the effort i.e fieldwork for gathering data from the nook and corner of country. Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is the conductor of this huge exercise and the results will be made available after verification and validation of field work and deadline for presenting the report has been fixed as January 2020. Economic Census is the complete count of all establishments located within the geographical boundary of India and is of vital importance for the nation since it is only through this we get a comprehensive information package on the non‐farm  economic  activities  which   have  a lot  of  diversity  in  terms  of  organization  and  management carried  out  both by  units  registered or licensed  and  by  self‐employed/ own  account  establishments  who do not care for a  registration or license. With  so  much  diversity in the backdrop it is thus necessary to gather correct information about   these  units which will  throw valuable insights into the geographical spreads of economic activities, ownership pattern, persons engaged, etc. and the information thus collected will be an essential fodder for socio-economic developmental planning at state and district levels. Six Economic Censuses, have been conducted so far with 1977 being the maiden and 2013 the immediate preceding one. This time, technology will be used in good measure by the means of mobile application and geo-tagging with two rounds of supervision to ensure quality of the census.
The 7th Economic Census will also be important particularly because it has been undertaken at a time when the country is facing an economic slowdown with  increasing unemployment. The data bank that will be created as  per  international  practices  adopted  by  developing countries  may act as catalyst for arriving at both long & short term sustainable solutions.
And since this massive operation involves direct interactions with people, smart publicity and awareness campaigns  are  also  necessary for its success.
