At a time when all attention are on Delhi election outcome, another shameful act that had purportedly been committed on students and again in the national capital had been brought to light. This time, the victims had been the girl students of well-known Gargi College and there are serious allegations of en masse molestation by outsiders, who had allegedly been in hundreds. Although there is a slight difference of this case with that of the JNU incident since it was exclusively violent in the latter, similarities are also quite visible. Coming to the similarities, in both cases it’s been the ‘handiwork’ of the outsiders who had been voluminous and had perhaps discharged their ‘duties’ at the instructions of certain ‘others’. Another similarity which can be noticed is that fingers this time too have been raised towards the administration, both comprising the college and that of the security apparatus and it has been alleged that their attitudes had been surprisingly lackadaisical.
The said incident which has now just started creating flutters took place a few days back during the college fest when a mob of men, allegedly drunk, gatecrashed the campus and sexually assaulted the college students of this all-women’s college. And the most amazing aspect of the episode is that college administration had initially refused to take any action in spite of a deluge of complaints made by the victims and the whole country came to know about this dastardly act only when these hapless students took to the social media to narrate their tale of woes, which is nothing short of a nightmare. Another serious allegation that has been made is the ‘inaction’ of the Rapid Action Force and Delhi Police personnel who were deployed near the gate from where the gang of men allegedly made entry. If is really so then it is not just a case of general lapse of security, but rather a case of deliberate lapse of security. Delhi Police have now taken up the investigation and probing all angles including scanning of CCTV footages. Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has also acted in its capacity and taken notice of the incident and the issue was also raised in LS on Monday. Although an unbiased investigation will bring out the truth, it can be said with stress that there had been a deep and professional planning beforehand and the perpetrators had been ‘sponsored’ and it’s surely not an act of some street Romeos.
It will be difficult to efface the trauma underwent by these students. But to make sure that there is no further repetition of such heinous act in future anywhere in the country, investigation must not be a mere eyewash and culprits must be booked fast.
