November 26 is always a special day for the country as it’s the day when people commemorate adoption of the Constitution, the most vital source from where the Indian democracy derives its necessary strength. But November 26, 2019 will always be remembered henceforth as an extra-special day as the nation has seen a great rescue exercise which has saved its democracy and constitutional principles from getting severely tainted. By now, Supreme Court’s verdict had made everything clear about Maharashtra and realising that the ‘coup’ attempt has been a great miscalculation, the initiators have no option but to throw the towel. There had been high drama during the last month riddled with some of the most unexpected twists and turns which only intensified as days passed by since the declaration of results on October 24. Exchange of  slugfests, direct and even concealed in veils of moral pointers and innuendos in most brazen manners among the warring factions have been conspicuous elements, along with high suspense, completely stupefying the entire country. But there was only one clamour- the adored principles of democracy must be protected at any cost. And after the pronouncement, it wouldn’t be incorrect to infer that, yes, people by and large have heaved a shy of relief and also felt excited watching the defeat of the patrons of ‘do as you like’.

It was a ‘great expectation’ on the part of BJP that there would be repetition of ‘success stories’ that had been practised elsewhere in various states and the general perception that emanated particularly during the peak of the drama in last three days also suggested that it’s going to be the same also in Maharashtra. It was feared that the country will read a new and perhaps a more updated chapter on the subject of ‘art of horse-trading’ if the floor test gets deferred. But as soon as the mandate came that it’s within 24 hours the exercise has to be compulsorily carried out, both BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis and NCP's Ajit Pawar resigned as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively, marking the end of one of the most audacious attempt in the history of electoral politics in the country to reach the corridors of power circumventing the established norms of the Constitution.

Only time will tell about the longevity of the three-party alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP & Congress and the onus thus now falls straight on them to prove detractors wrong. But, the episode must be counted as a great teacher where the lessons taught are- go strictly by the sacred book of democracy and never try politics of arrogance and hubris. This holds good for any political believer and sooner they are digested, the better it will be for them & Indian democracy.
