New Delhi, Jun 25: Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairying Gabriel D. Wangsu participated in a day-long workshop to strategise and empower the states and UTs for the ensuing 21stLivestock Census organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Govt. of India in the national capital. He was accompanied by Secretary Hage Tari and a team of officers.
The inaugural function of the workshop was addressed by Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Union Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries.
In his address, Wangsu said that data fuels modern development and the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) scheme aimed at regular data collection on major livestock products is critical for informed policy-making.
He urged the Government of India to look into the concerns of hilly states as unlike plain areas, conduct of enumeration in sparsely populated and tough terrain is a challenging task. “Many villages are situated on hill top or slopes. There is no road communication; it requires days of foot march to reach many villages specially those lying in international borders,” he said.
“It is essential to increase the number of enumerators and supervisors in our state to ensure timely and precise data collection,” he remarked and therefore, urged the Government of India to emphasise on IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities to extensively create awareness amongst the public and rural masses.
He also reiterated on correct enumeration & digitizing data of livestock & poultry resources of the country that will immensely contribute in shaping our plan & strategizing developmental agendas.
The workshop was organized by GoI, to empower the state Animal Husbandry officers to the new digital app based livestock census module for the proposed countrywide 21st livestock census. The livestock census is a massive exercise to enroll all the livestock species digitally and prepare a data base for livestock resources of the country.
The 2 day-long workshop was attended by senior officers from Animal Husbandry departments from across the country at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
