Itanagar, Oct 15: “Mithun a gentle giant is the thermometer to understand the quality of environment; where Mithun thrives, it may be taken for granted that the natural environment is at its best,” said Gabriel D. Wangsu, Minister for AHV, Agri, Food and Civil Supply, while releasing the road map for Revitalizing Mithun Sector in Arunachal Pradesh on the occasion of 37th Foundation Day of ICAR-National Research Centre- Medziphema, Nagaland on Tuesday.
The minister, who was the Chief Guest of the day-long function, vehemently advocated to protect and propagate Mithun rearing since it is the most prized possession of the tribal communities since it is intricately linked to tribal culture and traditions. Calling upon the need for all the Mithun rearing states to share common platform to address the concerns, Wangsu insisted on declaring Mithun as domestic animal in a cohesive manner.
“Even there is need to seek international collaboration of all the Mithun rearing nations especially Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh so that the Mithun farmers get the best since the gentle giant has been recognized as a food animal,” Wangsu observed in presence of large gathering of scientists and farmers.
He also stressed for creation of Mithun Research and Training facilities in Arunachal Pradesh and urged the scientific fraternity to introduce kits to detect Mithun meat adulteration for quality control. He further emphasised on scientific Mithun rearing through adoption of semi-intensive type of rearing.
The minister, who was accompanied by Secretary AHV Hage Tari, Director AHV Dr. D. Longri, Director among others, requested the Mithun farmers from different states to take benefit of the regional work shop and the institutional supports and guidance extended by the NRC-Mithun.
Dr. Dheer Singh, Director of ICAR-NDRI-Karnal and Dr. Girish Patil, Director, ICAR-NRC-Mithun, Nagaland and host of senior officers from Govt of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh also attended the programme.
Earlier on his way to Nagaland in Jorhat, Assam, Gabriel D Wangsu visited Bahubali layer farm at Koronga and Winery run by Northeast Agro product and services yesterday. These layer farm and winery are classic example of ‘Vocal for Local’ entrepreneurial venture by dedicated young entrepreneurs. He also visited and interacted with officers and officials of the Food and Civil Supply, Roweriah in Jorhat while taking stock of the various infrastructure of the office of the departments of Civil Supplies and PWD.
