PASIGHAT, May 9: The voluntary flood control works by the villagers of Borguli village, especially by the WRC field owners under Mebo Sub-Division of East Siang District are still continuing ahead of the monsoon season with a hope to divert the river waters and to minimise the impact of soil erosion by Siang River toward the villagers’ Wetland Rice Cultivation agricultural land areas.
The people of Borguli village, especially the affected WRC field owners have been initiating and doing the flood control works since last two months on voluntary and self-contribution basis with extended support from the Mebo MLA and WRD department. These flood control works on a voluntary basis intensified after the formation of Siang Flood Warriors (SFW) recently in a school week night memorial programme of Govt. Middle School, Borguli (1956-1990) held on 19th April 2025 at Borguli village playground.
The Siang Flood Warriors actively led by one Gekong Pertin, a social worker are now pushing up and helping the flood affected villagers of Borguli whose WRC field lands are under immediate threat from erosion by Mighty River Siang which has already eroded away several hundred hectares of lands along the left bank of Siang River.
To support and back-up the on-going works of villagers on flood control works, SFW head Gekong Pertin along with WRD Pasighat Division, EE, Onit Panyang accompanied by WRD AE Mebo, Alat Megu and others visited the flood work sites today and motivated the villagers.
Gekong Pertin shared his ideas and reasons to support the villagers in their hard effort to fight away soil erosion concerns by the Mighty Siang river, as government fundings were delaying to check and control the soil erosion. Pertin said that along with him many other individuals are voluntarily helping and contributing financially and by engaging their Dumper Trucks, JCBs etc in lifting boulders from far off locations like near Silluk village and Sigar village. Pertin affirmed his commitment to help the affected villagers in coming days also.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer, WRD, Onit Panyang has handed over a sum of Rs. 50,000 to the SFW head Gekong Pertin from his personal side as a support to the villagers voluntary initiative to check the soil erosion. The WRD Pasighat Division with the initiative of Mebo MLA, Oken Tayeng has already placed several flood control schemes to the government to check the massive soil erosion by the Siang river. But it is heard that the government fundings was not sanctioned this time which has prompted the villagers to initiate flood control works on a voluntary basis.
