Naharlagun, Aug 31: In a significant operation against insurgent activities, Naharlagun Police successfully apprehended two hardcore cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and one overground worker, recovering a substantial amount of extortion money.
Acting on a tip-off received in the evening hours of 30 August, the police were informed that suspected insurgents were extorting money from the public in Naharlagun by instilling fear. The suspects were reportedly seen in a white Toyota Innova car.
Under the supervision of DIGP ICR Vijay Kumar, IPS, a team was swiftly assembled, comprising SP Naharlagun Mihin Gambo, IPS, SDPO Naharlagun Paul Jerang, SDPO Yupia Radhe Obing, Inspector K. Dev, and staff from the Naharlagun Police Station. The vehicle was intercepted near E-Sector, Naharlagun, leading to the arrest of Sampho Wangsa, 40, a resident of Pangchau, Longding, and overground worker Chandan Bhuyan, 35, from Narayanpur, Lakhimpur, Assam.
During interrogation, Wangsa revealed his affiliation with the NSCN-IM as the Revenue Incharge of Pangchau and Wakka areas in Longding. He confessed that he had come to collect extortion money from local businessmen in collaboration with another insurgent, Chopsai Pansa from Longding. Wangsa then voluntarily led the police to Pansa's hiding place.
Following this lead, the police raided a hotel in E-Sector, Naharlagun, where they apprehended Chopsai Pansa, 55, a self-styled Captain of the NSCN-IM. Pansa was found in possession of ₹3.4 lakh in cash and two cheques of ₹20 lakh each, which were extorted from local businesses. Incriminating materials were also recovered.
