LONGDING, June 20: A severe outbreak of diarrhoea has claimed the lives of two children in Konsa Village, located in Longding district. As per reports, a total of 19 children have been infected with the disease.
Dr. Aza Miyu, the District Medical Officer (Incharge) of Longding District, revealed that the first child succumbed to the illness on June 15, while the second death occurred in the early hours of June 18. The outbreak was reported to the medical authorities only on June 18 by the Village Chief.
“There is no health center in the village, so we immediately formed a surveillance team and rushed to the spot with the required medicines,” Dr. Miyu stated. During their visit, villagers informed the team that at least 19 children were affected by the severe diarrhoea epidemic, and two had already lost their lives.
After conducting medical examinations, three of the infected children were referred to the District Hospital for further medical assistance. Stool samples were collected and sent to the TRIHMS for examination, with results expected within a week.
Dr. Miyu mentioned that the medical team inspected the village’s water sources, as the children were consuming water from a PHED water tank. Officials from the PHED have been urged to conduct water testing, as waterborne bacteria are a common cause of such outbreaks. The villagers also reported that the infected children had consumed maize and palm, which could be possible sources of contamination.
In the absence of a health center in the village, an ASHA member has been assigned with the required medicines to look after the infected children. No new cases have been reported so far. Additionally, a medical team from Pongchau village has been instructed to stay in touch with the villagers to monitor the situation.
The district authorities are taking all necessary measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of lives, said the DMO.
