TAWANG, Jan 12: Expressing solidarity, thousands of residents in Tawang, including , monks, students, and community leaders, participated in a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to the victims of the January 7 earthquake in Tibet. The disaster claimed at least 126 lives, injured over 100, and left many homeless, with tremors felt across Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India.
The vigil was an initiative by Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering that began at the Galden Namgyal Lhatse Monastery (Tawang Monastery) and concluded at Masang Dungyur Mani, Old Market, Tawang.The procession, led by MLA Tsering and the monastery’s Abbot, Shedling Tulku Thupten Tendar Rinpoche, included prayers for the deceased and for the well-being of the injured and displaced.
Participants included monks from various monasteries, government officials, public leaders, and representatives of organizations such as the Monpa Mimang Tsogpa (MMT), All Monpa Students’ Union (AMSU), All Tawang District Students’ Union (ATDSU), and the Women Welfare Association (WWA). local market associations, social organizations, and citizens from all walks of life also joined the procession.
