ITANAGAR, Dec 11: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR) has expressed deep anguish over the incident of corporal punishment of many minor children at Acharyakulam School, Seijosa, under Pakke Kessang District inflicted by the Headmaster.
Member Secretary Khoda Rakhi, visited the Acharyakulam School today along with ADC T R Tapu, S C Norbu, SDPO, Nabam Petrus, CWC Member to inquire into the matter. During the inquiry the team interacted with the parents as well as the victim children. It was found that 20 students including Class I students were subjected to physical abuse by the School in-charge Sadhvi Devkriti during the class hours on December 7 last. Further they were also threatened of dire consequences if the incident was reported to their parents. However, the matter came to light when parents noticed bruise marks on their children’s body. Admitting the mistake of the Sadhvi, the Secretary General of the Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust has terminated the services of Sadhvi Devkriti with immediate effect on December 10.
The Commission however opines that the issue does not resolve simply on termination of the accused Sadhvi. But said that she should be immediately arrested and booked under appropriate sections of law and awarded appropriate punishment. The Commission in this matter has also submitted its recommendation to the State Government from time to time for strict verification of character antecedents of all employees under both government and private run educational institutes to reduce such instances of violation of child rights. With the mushrooming of schools in Arunachal Pradesh, this activity is becoming most important and should be mandatorily practiced by all the educational institutes, the child rights body said.
Further it is also informed that the Acharyakulam school has not yet been registered as per the mandatory norms of RTE Act 2009, but it has been running since 2019. Therefore, strict action should be initiated by the Education Department against the School Management of Acharyakulam School, Seijosa for violation of Section 17(1) and 18 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, the Commission stated.
