ITANAGAR, June 25: Along with the rest of the BJP leaders in the country, the state  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today also observed  "Black Day"  by burning an effigy of former Prime Minister of India late Indira Gandhi signifying the party's condemnation of the Emergency imposed on this day in 1975.
Addressing the media, BJP State General Secretary Tadar Niglar asserted that the term "Black Day" originated with Gandhian leader Jayaprakash Narayan. On June 25, 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of Emergency, which led to the suspension of civil liberties, mass arrests of opposition leaders, and strict media censorship. In response, Narayan initiated a protest movement and referred to the date as a dark period in Indian democracy.
Niglar emphasized the BJP's commitment to raising awareness about the harsh realities of the Emergency. He highlighted the scale of repression, as per the official record 1,00,000 imprisonments were done, though he claimed that the actual number is significantly higher. Additionally, the forced sterilization campaign affected 6 million people aged 16 to 70, leading to the deaths of over 2,000 individuals.
Prominent leaders such as former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani were imprisoned during this time, and even members of the film industry faced bans.
"We observe this day to ensure that such violations of basic human rights is never repeated," Niglar stated.
