ITANAGAR, July 27: Legal Advisor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF), Bhanu Tatak, has urged authorities not to use force in the construction of a dam in Upper Siang and to respect the will of the affected people. Speaking to the media at the press club on Saturday, Tatak refuted the Deputy Chief Minister cum Power Minister's claim that the mega dam is essential for national security.
Tatak emphasized that the Adi lands are not part of Southern Tibet, as claimed by China. "We are Indians and we have all rights to protect our lands," she asserted. She criticized the Deputy Chief Minister for misrepresenting the number of affected villagers, clarifying that while there are no claims of 300 villages being impacted, the 2011 Census indicates that at least 1.50 lakh people will be affected by the dam.
"The indigenous people do not want the dam on their land," Tatak continued, urging the government to visit the ground to understand the reality. She warned that if the proposed dam is constructed, these 1.50 lakh people would become refugees in their own homes.
