ITANAGAR, June 2: In a surprising turn of events, several prominent BJP candidates faced defeat in the recently concluded Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections, signalling significant shift in the political landscape.
Sitting BJP Minister Taba Tedir from the 16 Yachuli constituency was defeated by newcomer NCP candidate Toko Tatung, who won by a margin of 228 votes with a total of 8,255 votes. Despite high-profile campaign rallies attended by Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein in support of Tedir, the incumbent was unable to retain his seat.
In the 27 Liromoba constituency, BJP candidate Nyamar Karbak also failed to secure re-election, managing only 5,508 votes against NPP’s Pisi Jilen, who received 7,206 votes. This loss occurred despite the Chief Minister's public assurance of a cabinet berth for Karbak during the election campaign.
Another notable loss for the BJP came from the 14th Doimukh Assembly constituency, where sitting BJP candidate Tana Hali Tara was defeated by PPA candidate Nabam Vivek. Vivek, who joined the PPA after being denied a BJP ticket, emerged victorious, highlighting the intra-party dynamics that influenced voter sentiment.
Senior legislator Lombo Tayeng from the 39 Mebo constituency lost his seat to first-time candidate Oken Tayeng of the PPA. Lombo, who had previously been elected unopposed in 2014, and a good margin win in 2019 as an Indian National Congress candidate before switching to the BJP ahead of the 2024 election, was defeated by a margin of 1,017 votes, securing only 5,270 votes in this election.
In the Pasighat East constituency, BJP legislator Kaling Moyong was narrowly defeated by NPP’s Tapi Darang with a slim margin of 321 votes. This close contest underscored the competitive nature of the elections this year.
The BJP also faced defeat in the 48 Lekang constituency, where Namsai BJP district President Sujana Namchoom was defeated by NCP’s Likha Soni by a margin of 654 votes. This loss further highlighted the challenges faced by the ruling party in maintaining its stronghold.
