Longding , Oct 24: An RTI awareness campaign was organized at Longding District headquarters by the Arunachal Pradesh Information Commission in collaboration with District Administration and AAPSU on October 22 last. The resource person of the program was Sonam Yudron, the State Information Commissioner.
Deputy Commissioner Longding, Bani Lego while addressing the gathering said RTI is an important tool to promote transparency and accountability on the part of the government thereby giving true meaning to democracy. He suggested the PIOs/APIOs to perform their responsibilities effectively and furnish necessary information to the appellants in timely manner. He further requested appellants to use the rights under RTI in public interest.
While speaking at the occasion Ms Yodron spoke about the genesis of the RTI and discussed various powers and duties of PIOs/APIOs. She also delineated on the responsibilities of the information seekers and cautioned people from filing bogus and frivolous RTIs for parochial gains.
She also said that the RTI applicant should avoid seeking unrealistic information stating “some people ask information for 10 to 15 years which creates unnecessary burden”. “The commission has now decided to entertaining application for furnishing information for one financial year, one block and one project," she added.
She urged that public authorities should maintain all the information in a proper manner so as to make information easily accessible. Also, she urged the officials to disclose information in a voluntary manner on various official platforms and in the office so that people readily get information without needing to file an RTI application.
If used properly, RTI will ensure transparency and accountability and aid in the process of development, Ms Yudron told.
